Kodiak: Error 404
Error 404 indicates that the LabelForge Pro software cannot read the ribbon chip. This is usually accompanied by printer Error 22.
The LabelForge Pro software requires information about the label material, size, color and appropriate printer settings from the smart chip in the ribbon to interface with the printer. Without access to this information, the software cannot display the appropriate canvas and background. The chip is housed on the ribbon cartridge. This chip must make contact with the pins in the printer for the software to read the material.
Troubleshooting:
- Ensure that the ribbon is from DuraLabel by confirming the part number. Kodiak ribbon will start with K… This information can be found on the supply box or by selecting the supply icons in the top right corner on the printer screen or the printer icon in the top right corner of LabelForge Pro if printing from the PC. If the printer is showing a "!" icon over the supply icons when looking, it may not display the part number and the supply box or label on the cartridge will be needed.
- Confirm the ribbon chip is still present in the cartridge and hasn’t shifted or slipped out of its housing. In the Kodiak, it should be on the orange end piece with the silver arrow. If it has shifted, it can be pushed back into place. If it’s missing, the ribbon will need to be replaced.
- Remove the ribbon from the printer and then reseat the cartridge to ensure that the ribbon chip is making contact with the ribbon pins in the printer. If pressed into the printer gently, pins should spring back out.
- Power cycle the printer to ensure that it is not stuck in error status.
- Load a new or different ribbon into the printer to determine if the issue is with the current ribbon or all ribbons.
- In the Kodiak swap the ribbon locations to see if the error changes from 22 to 23 or vice versa. If error follows the ribbon, it indicates the ribbon chip is defective. If the error does not change it may indicate the ribbon pins in the printer are defective. If a second ribbon is not available, swap the blank ribbon cartridge location with the ribbon having issues. The Kodiak requires two ribbons to be loaded or a blank/placeholder cartridge to deactivate one of the ribbon slots.
- Set the driver as the default. This may help the software register the correct printer and supplies.
- Close and then open the software to reestablish communication with the printer.
- Open and close the lid to ensure the printer is registering the lid closure. The lid must be closed for the software to detect the supplies.
- Ensure that the roll of label stock is from DuraLabel by confirming the part number. Kodiak supply will start with K... This information can be found on the supply box or by selecting the supply icons in the top right corner on the printer screen or the printer icon in the top right corner of LabelForge Pro if printing from the PC. If the printer is showing a "!" icon over the supply icons when looking, it may not display the part number and the supply box will be needed.
- Confirm the end cap with the DuraLabel label and smart chip are facing the antenna. In the Kodiak it will be facing the feed direction label on the supply holder.
- Load a different roll of label material into the printer in order to test if the software is failing to read multiple rolls. Ideally this should be new supply so that we can confirm the part number from the box.
- If the issue only occurs with a single roll then this indicates the chip in the one roll of supply is defective and should be replaced.
- If all rolls present the error, there may be an issue with the software, the printer driver or the printer’s antenna.
- If error continues, contact Tech Support or your Account Manager for further instructions.
