KodiakMax: Error 22/23

Error 22/23 indicates that the KodiakMax (print head 1/print head 2), cannot detect or fails to validate the ribbon.

DuraLabel printers require ribbons with a smart chip that contains information about the material, size, color and appropriate printer settings to ensure optimal print quality and efficiency. Without access to this information, the printer cannot print. The chip is housed on the ribbon cartridge. This chip must make contact with the pins in the printer for it to read the material.

Troubleshooting:

  1. Ensure that the ribbon is from DuraLabel by confirming the part number. KodiakMax ribbon will start with KM… This information can be found on the supply box or by selecting the supply icons in the top right corner on the printer screen or the printer icon in the top right corner of LabelForge Pro if printing from the PC. Kodiak Max ribbon will also have a part number label on the ribbon cartridge when opening the lid. If the printer is showing a "!" icon over the supply icons when looking, it may not display the part number and the supply box or label on the cartridge will be needed.
  2. Confirm the ribbon chip is present in the cartridge. In the Kodiak Max it will be on the far end of the cartride that to the left of the bottom gray roller. If it’s missing, the ribbon will need to be replaced.
  3. Remove the ribbon from the printer and then reseat the cartridge to ensure that the ribbon chip is making contact with the ribbon pins in the printer. If pressed into the printer, pins should spring back out.
  4. Power cycle the printer to ensure that it is not stuck in error status.
  5. Load a new or different ribbon into the printer to determine if the issue is with the current ribbon or all ribbons.
  6. In the KodiakMax swap the ribbon locations to see if the error changes from 22 to 23 or vice versa. If error follows the ribbon, it indicates the ribbon chip is defective. If the error does not change it may indicate the ribbon pins in the printer are defective. If a second ribbon is not available, swap the blank ribbon cartridge location with the ribbon having issues. The KodiakMax requires two ribbons to be loaded or a blank/placeholder cartridge to deactivate one of the ribbon slots.
  7. If error continues, contact Tech Support or your Account Manager for further instructions.
